With growing concerns of “nature deficit disorder” becoming a real issue among children, outdoor education is as important now as it has ever been. More often we hear about recess being limited to once a day and for no more than 20 minutes in elementary schools across the country. Free outdoor play is imperative for a growing developing mind to thrive. The founders of Outdoor Life Learners recognized this need for free nature play and decided to do something about it. The four moms started a free nature club right here in the CNY area. Each week families gather at a roaming CNY location and enjoy a little nature yoga, lots of free play and exploration and nature education in the woods. The roaming nature club has grown in popularity over the course of two years which prompted these nature loving moms to create Outdoor Life Learners. Together with their diverse backgrounds in education, neuroscience, music theory and naturalist experience they decided to bring a nature based educational alternative to our area.
Outdoor Life Learners (OLL) provides Nature Immersion Programs for children of all ages including community outreach programs, a year round, free weekly Nature Club, Nature Yoga, and a Nature School running on an academic calendar (September through June). The goal of OLL is to foster the next generation of environmental stewards. OLL believes young, developing minds need sunlight, fresh air and dirt in copious amounts and on a daily basis. OLL also believes children learn best through free, unstructured and spontaneous play. Our educational program offerings are designed with this winning formula at their core: nature + free play = life long learners who will never lose their innate curiosity for life, awe of the natural world and passion for exploration and experimentation.
Outdoor Life Learners’ Outreach Programs range from half-day workshops with area Girl Scout Troops, day long Nature Labs for Teens and Pre-Teens, Nature Birthday Parties, Nature Themed Yoga and more. In addition, OLL periodically organizes community events that are free and open to the public, geared towards families, in hopes of continuing to encourage everyone to get outside and enjoy Nature. Our website, www.outdoorlifelearners.com is the best place to learn more about upcoming events and how to contact us if interested in having OLL provide programming for area organizations or families.
This fall, Outdoor Life Learners and Amberations will be working collaboratively as Nature Center and Nature School unite to provide area families an alternative to their child’s educational needs. OLL Hike Tykes is perfect for the preschool crowd (3 to 6 years of age). This program will meet Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, from 9:15 – noon. OLL Explorers offers a unique space for kids ages 6 to 12, where they can interact with nature and learn in the way that suits them best. This program is the perfect addition for area homeschooling families, as experiences go towards fulfilling NYS Homeschooling standards in ELA, STEM, Physical and Health Education. This program will meet Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 9am to 3pm. Both programs take place mostly outdoors, rain, snow or shine. Children are taught to embrace dressing for the weather. Parents are encouraged to be their child’s greatest supporter in this unique and memorable opportunity.
